What is Prescreening for Skin Cancer?

The prescreening program for patients is a detailed examination of all pigmented lesions the patient presents, in order to make an early detection of any pre-cancer or skin cancer lesions. This early detection of any skin cancers, especially any Melanomas, can save lives! Melanoma is one of the most lethal types of skin cancer. This malignant tumor appears on the skin, primarily or above other pigmented lesions, and spreads to other internal organs very quickly, such as the lungs, brain, and liver. With that said, it is very important to detect it as soon as possible.

How is the screening performed?

After the clinic/visual examination, the Specialist will use the DERMOSCOPY device. This is a non-invasive method, where the skin lesions are examined using a Dermascope. Through the Dermascope, it is possible to analyze the structures, color, and pattern of distribution of the pigments on the skin and will allow the Specialist to be able to distinguish benign from malignant tumors, particularly in the diagnosis of Melanoma. If a suspicious lesion is detected, further instructions will be provided to the patient for the best treatment option.

Is it painful?

No, the examination is not painful at all!

How often should I have the prescreening done?

Usually one a year is fine. However, in special cases, it must be repeated every 3 to 6 months. Patients with a history of Melanoma Skin Cancer should have the prescreening done every 6 months.

What are Skin Tags?

Skin Tags’ are small, soft, benign skin tumors, usually in multiples, with different tones (ranging from light beige to dark brown) and sizes. They are usually present at the eyelids, neck, underarms, under the breasts, and along the perianal and groin folds. They may be stalk-like or raised from the surface of the skin like fleshy peduncles. They are hereditary and appear where skin rubs together or where skin rubs against clothing. They are very common and can occur at any time. People who are overweight, or are considered obese, diabetics, and pregnant women are more affected.

Should I be worried? Are Skin Tags harmful?

No, skin tags are not dangerous or harmful. Usually they are removed for aesthetic reasons. However, in some cases, depending on the size and where they are placed, when repeatedly rubbing against something or scratching, it can make them even more irritated, expanding in size, and can be slightly painful. If the look, size, and feel doesn’t bother you, then don’t worry about removing them. However, if they are painful and snag easily then we can definitely remove them for you.

How are Skin Tags removed?

We do not recommend removing a skin tag at home, due to a risk of bleeding and possible infection.

The following procedures may be used:

  • Cryosurgery: the skin tag is frozen off using a probe with liquid nitrogen.
  • Cauterization: the skin tag is burned off using electrolysis.
  • Excision + Cauterization: the skin tag is cut out with a scalpel or scissors, and then burned off by electrolysis.
Is it painful?

No, usually treatment is not painful at all. However, if necessary, we are able to apply a topical anesthetic or make a little point of local anesthetic on the larger skin tags, so that any discomfort is minimized.

How many sessions are necessary?

Only one session is necessary. The skin tags that are removed will not return. However, new ones can also form at any time close to the area previously treated or in a completely new area. They are hereditary and appear where skin rubs together or where skin rubs against clothing. People who are overweight, or are considered obese, diabetics, and pregnant women are more affected.

How quickly can I get back to my daily activities?

Patients are able to resume their normal activities following treatment.
