What is a Microdermabrasion treatment?

Microdermabrasion is considered an aesthetic procedure that helps to renew the skin on your face. Microdermabrasion also helps to improve the texture and tone of the skin, the appearance of aging – like fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, as well as acne scars, enlarged pores, and blackheads. It also combats sun damage and can be used in the treatment of stretch marks.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure uses a special applicator with a rotating abrasive surface that “sands away” the outer layer of the skin. There are some devices that spray fine particles of crystals or aluminum oxide, that accomplish the same outcome.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed depends on the type damage, how severe the damage is on the skin, and the type of skin you have.

Is it Safe?

Yes, it is safe. However, it is extremely important to receive treatment by a qualified and experienced professional.

Are there any pre-instructions prior to the procedure?

Discuss all your skin concerns with our Skin & Laser Specialist. Our specialist will let you know if this is the best treatment option to address your concerns. If so, you must avoid sun exposure, tanning creams, and waxing about 1-week before treatment. It is also very important to stop any skincare products that contain acids, Retin-A, and Vitamin C, a week prior to treatment.

Is it painful?

There can be slight discomfort. However, to minimize discomfort, we can apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area 30 minutes prior to treatment.

What are the side effects?

The side effects from Microdermabrasion include redness, slight swelling, and mild tenderness. These effects can last a few hours, while redness can last for 24-36 hours depending on if you have very, very sensitive skin. It will be important for you to keep your skin well hydrated and to avoid using topical medications for 2-3 days. You must use sunblock every day after the treatment. Not applying sunblock can cause undesirable hyperpigmentation. We recommend a mineral-based sunblock with Zinc Oxide.

What can I expect after the procedure?

There is little to no downtime after a Microdermabrasion treatment. However, expect redness and mild tenderness on your face for at least 2 hours. The results are noticeable within 3-4 days, but continue to improve until the next week.

How quickly can I get back to my daily activities?

Patients are able to resume their normal activities following treatment.
